Strategi Penerjemah sebagai Mediator Budaya dalam Menerjemahkan Novel Indonesia ke Bahasa Inggris

Artikel ini mengeksplorasi strategi penerjemahan dalam proses penerjemahan karya sastra dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris, dengan fokus pada novel berjudul "Jatisaba" yang kaya akan istilah dan ekspresi budaya Jawa (Banyumasan). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi strategi yang diterapkan oleh penerjemah dalam mentransfer karya sastra yang penuh dengan istilah budaya dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris. Praktik ini dilakukan oleh agen penerjemahan sastra yang berpotensi memperkenalkan karya penulis Indonesia kepada pembaca internasional serta memperdalam pemahaman mereka tentang identitas budaya melalui karya sastra. Penelitian ini menganalisis seorang penerjemah, Christopher Allen Woodrich, seorang penutur asli bahasa Inggris dengan latar belakang akademis yang memberikan modal budaya yang cukup dalam sastra Indonesia. Kajian ini menggunakan konsep strategi Bourdieu dalam teori produksi budaya sebagai kerangka pemikiran. Metode penelitian mencakup wawancara dan pemilihan dokumen untuk pengumpulan data. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerjemah menggunakan strategi yang membantu pembaca memahami karya terjemahan sambil mempertahankan keaslian lokalnya. Strategi ini berpotensi meningkatkan visibilitas penerjemah dan menyoroti pentingnya modal budaya dalam praktik penerjemahan.
