The Influence of Video Learning Media to Increase Student’s Interest In Reading at Pusaka Abadi High School Students Jakarta

This study aims to examine the effect of video-based instructional media on increasing reading interest among senior high school students. The study is grounded in the problem of low student reading interest in the digital era, where learners tend to be more attracted to visual content than written texts. This research employed a quasi-experimental design, the Pretest–Posttest Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 72 tenth-grade students at Pusaka Abadi High School, Jakarta, divided into two groups: Class X-A as the experimental group (36 students), which received instruction using video-based learning media, and Class X-B as the control group (36 students), which received conventional learning. Data were collected using a reading-interest questionnaire administered before and after treatment. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive analysis included frequency distribution tables, histograms, and stem-and-leaf plots, while inferential analysis employed the t-test and ANCOVA to examine differences in students’ reading interest before and after the treatment. The findings showed that the experimental group experienced a greater increase in reading interest than the control group. The mean score of the experimental group increased from [pretest mean] to [posttest mean], while the control group increased from [pretest mean] to [posttest mean]. The statistical analysis indicated a significant difference between the two groups, as shown by the t-test result of [t-value], p = [p-value], and the ANCOVA result of [F-value], p = [p-value]. These results indicate that video-based instructional media were more effective than conventional learning in improving students’ reading interest. In conclusion, video-based instructional media can be considered an effective strategy for fostering reading interest among senior high school students. This study is expected to contribute theoretically to the development of educational research and practically to assist teachers and schools in selecting learning media appropriate for the characteristics of today’s learners.
