Abstract

Kemampuan berkomunikasi secara efektif dalam bahasa Inggris sangat penting bagi kadet maritim karena sifat internasional industri maritim. Namun, banyak kadet mengalami kesulitan dalam menerapkan pengetahuan kelas mereka pada situasi komunikasi nyata. Studi ini menyelidiki peran English Personnel Care (EPC) dalam mengembangkan keterampilan praktis bahasa Inggris kadet di Merchant Marine Polytechnic of Makassar. Dengan menggunakan desain studi kasus kualitatif, studi ini melibatkan dua mentor EPC dan tiga kadet sebagai peserta wawancara, sementara observasi dilakukan dengan dua puluh empat kadet yang berpartisipasi dalam program. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara, pengamatan, dan dokumentasi serta dianalisis menggunakan model interaktif Miles, Huberman, dan Saldaña. Temuan tersebut mengungkapkan bahwa EPC memainkan peran penting dalam meningkatkan keterampilan bahasa Inggris praktis kadet dengan menyediakan latihan bahasa secara berkelanjutan, meningkatkan kepercayaan diri dalam komunikasi, dan menciptakan peluang untuk interaksi bahasa Inggris yang otentik. Selain itu, pendekatan mentoring yang diadopsi oleh EPC mendorong partisipasi aktif dan mendukung pengembangan kompetensi komunikatif dalam konteks maritim. Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa EPC berfungsi sebagai sistem dukungan efektif untuk meningkatkan keterampilan bahasa Inggris praktis di antara kadet maritim dan berkontribusi positif pada pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dalam pendidikan vokasi maritim.
